Recently, a new education-focused radio show hit the KAZI airwaves, and its message could be transformative for many of AISD’s African-American families. Breaking Down the Barriers with Ms. Terry Russell is AISD’s latest effort to share district news and engage families in the public education system through a platform that’s both accessible and relevant to its audience.
The monthly program is hosted by a district veteran—the loud and proud Terry Russell, who has worked with the district for nearly two decades in positions that range from security guard to parent support specialist. She’s seen the gamut of issues that can arise when communication doesn’t flow seamlessly between parents and the district, and Breaking Down the Barriers intends to do just that—remove any hurdles that may prevent families from engaging with AISD.
“I learned how to engage parents in my job as an office clerk at Pearce Middle School,” Russell said. “I made it my business to calm people down and reassure them while they were on campus. I provided quality customer service to the community by helping understand parents’ needs.”
As host of the new program, Russell will address topics that include parental involvement, literacy, new graduation requirements and more. Guests will appear on each episode to provide additional insight into pertinent topics and answer questions callers may have about AISD policies and programs.
“I truly believe it takes a village to raise a child, and I want to be a contributing member of the village,” Russell said. “If you don’t know who to call for answers, hopefully this show will enlighten you.”
Tune in to Breaking Down the Barriers with Ms.Terry Russell at 5 p.m. during the first Monday of every month on KAZI, 88.7 FM.
