Austin ISD held an official dedication ceremony for the Janis Guerrero Thompson Elementary School on Sunday, Nov. 3.
The dedication ceremony featured remarks by Board President Vince Torres, Trustee Ann Tiech and Director of Construction Management Jeff Kauffman.
The new elementary school is located in north central Austin, 102 E. Rundberg Lane. The campus opened in fall 2013 and is named after Janis Guerrero Thompson. During her lifetime as an educator and education advocate, Thompson made significant contributions to the profession of teaching and was instrumental in creating systems to ensure inclusive practices for Hispanic and African American students in Texas. Thompson taught high school in AISD for 17 years and later became the executive director of the planning and community relations department for the district serving all AISD schools, faculty and staff, and its more than 86,000 students.
To help alleviate overcrowding and address the needs of the school district’s growing community, a total of nine new schools and a district-wide performing arts center were included in the 2004 and 2008 bond programs, including Janis Guerrero Thompson.
