Lucy Read Pre-Kindergarten Demonstration School has partnered with the Austin office of Pearson for a We Give Books campaign, an initiative focused on building awareness in the community about the importance of reading to young children. Parents, students and community members are encouraged to participate in the campaign by reading a free book online at www.wegivebooks.org.
The online campaign kicks off on January 20. Individuals can read on behalf of Lucy Read’s campaign at http://www.wegivebooks.org/campaigns/lucy-read-pre-kindergarten-demonstration-school. For every book that is read for Lucy Read’s campaign, one new children’s book will be donated to the school, until its goal of 500 books is achieved. These new books will help the school to grow classroom libraries, while developing a love of reading in its students. Reading events will continue at Lucy Read through March 23. And, once Lucy Read’s online book goal is reached, individuals can continue reading, for free, in support of other non-profit organizations on www.wegivebooks.org.
Recognizing the importance of early childhood development, Lucy Read focuses on providing a well-rounded, engaging literacy experience for its students. The school is committed to raising awareness amongst parents and the community about the influence and impact a quality early childhood education has on children’s language and literacy skills. The teachers and staff at Lucy Read have seen firsthand, that when young children have a significant adult reading and discussing a story with them, their engagement with the story is greatly increased. This helps the children to acquire a much-needed foundation for building strong literacy skills, as well as the motivation to be lifelong readers and learners.

Lucy Read is a public school that serves approximately 580 four-year-old children from three north central elementary schools in Austin. Opened in 2006, Lucy Read is the first stand-alone prekindergarten school in the Austin Independent School District and serves students who are eligible for Texas State Prekindergarten. Students qualify for the state program by being either: limited-English proficient, educationally disadvantaged, child of active military parent, or homeless.
