Edmund Oropez, the district’s Chief Officer for Teaching and Learning, has informed Superintendent Paul Cruz of his intent to retire following the conclusion of the 2017–18 school year, effective Aug. 31, 2018.

“Edmund has an unwavering focus on ensuring that all students have an equal life chance. I thank him for his many years of exceptional service and commitment to Austin’s students, families and staff," said Cruz. "Not only do I thank Edmund for his years of service to AISD, I am also grateful for the advance notice of retirement he has given. I look forward to working with him over the next several months as I evaluate next steps to take, in order to assure our organization continues to reinvent public education.”

Oropez’s professional career in education spans nearly three decades and includes 14 years with AISD.

His roles with the district previously included principal of Lanier High School, associate superintendent of high schools, and his current position as chief officer for teaching and learning. 

As Chief Officer for Teaching and Learning, Oropez leads the focus on student learning and academics for the district’s 130 schools and more than 80,000 students.

He supervises the district’s associate superintendents and includes the divisions of special education, early childhood, multilingual education, academics and social and emotional learning, and the Office of School, Family and Community.
