Funds go toward parent support specialists, family resource centers and after-school programs
Austin ISD’s parent support specialists, the Prime Time after-school program and AISD Channel 22 will receive funding in the city of Austin’s 2016-17 budget, which took effect Oct. 1.
The city funds will continue to help support the district’s community engagement and social service initiatives at a critical time when AISD estimates it will send $406.1 million to the state through the recapture or “Robin Hood” program this year.
Further, the city budget included approval of Public, Educational and Access Channels funds for capital expenditure for Channel 22 from the city’s Telecommunications and Regulatory Affairs Office.
The city council approved expenditures including:
- $1.28 million to continue funding AISD’s full-time parent support specialists at 60 campuses, who work to enhance relationships between families and school communities, encourage parent involvement in their students’ education and help educate parents on school services and programs;
- $950,000 to maintain social support services at AISD campuses for after-school programs at 20 campuses;
- $460,000 for AISD’s Cable Channel 22 from the city’s Public, Educational and Government capital funding, which is drawn from cable fees to support public affairs and educational programming;
- $106,000 dedicated to fund five AISD Family Resource Centers as a part of a social service contract with health and human services; and
- $211,125 to continue the city’s Victory Tutorial program, in partnership with AISD, which provides tutoring at public libraries to students after school.
