Engaging Our Communities for College Readiness Presents Keynote Speaker Octavious Bishop
AUSTIN, Texas—Austin ISD is hosting the group Engaging our Community for College Readiness for a special presentation to teach the community how to influence success in all children.
What: The Encore Family Conference features keynote speaker Octavious Bishop.
When: 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23
Where: Webb Middle School, 601 E. St. John Ave.
Background: The conference encourages families and their students to plan for a higher education after high school.
Bishop was an offensive lineman on the football team at the University of Texas at Austin before playing with the National Football League's Chicago Bears. After retiring from professional football, he returned to the University of Texas to earn his bachelor's and master's degree in the field of social work. Bishop went on to earn a Ph.D. in neuropsychology and currently teaches classes at Austin Community College. Bishop has served as a male involvement program coordinator at five Austin area high schools, where he works with at-risk populations for Communities in Schools, a nonprofit organization focused on dropout prevention.
The event will close with a message from acoustic hip-hop artist Saul Paul. Lunch will be provided.
