Austin, TX (November 12, 2013)—On Tuesday, Nov. 12, The Klein Family announced a $50,000 donation to provide direct assistance for families with children enrolled in the Austin Independent School District as well as for AISD employees who were also displaced by the storms that flooded neighborhoods in Southeast Austin Oct. 31. At last count, there were 360 students and 25 AISD staff members who lost their homes or who have been temporarily displaced due to extensive flood damage.
“We appreciate Superintendent Meria Carstarphen’s deep concern for the well-being of AISD’s students and staff, and we are grateful and humbled to have the opportunity to support Austin students, their families and AISD staff during this critical time,” said Jeanne Klein.
The Kleins are providing their support through The Austin Project, a local 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, with service roots in the community facing the effects of the flood. TAP has dedicated 22 years to working with community organizations, agencies, neighborhoods, and individuals to nurture strength-based, efficient service delivery systems that promote parent and family engagement in schools and neighborhoods. TAP’s initiatives promote healthy lifestyles, provide access to basic needs, and create opportunities for families to take on leadership roles and make a difference in their own communities.
“The Austin Project would like to recognize the leadership of AISD’s superintendent and key district staff who have worked tirelessly to help identify families impacted and resources that will provide critically needed support,” said Donna Hagey, TAP executive director.
TAP is an active partner with AISD and the City of Austin in the disaster relief efforts and manages a school-based Family Resource Center, located at Mendez Middle School in the heart of several communities impacted by the flood. TAP’s Mendez FRC staff is working closely with families and AISD staff to provide direct assistance.
“Jeanne and Michael Klein have stepped forward and set an example with this generous donation for AISD families and children during a time of great need. We are so grateful for their support,” Meria Carstarphen, AISD superintendent, said.
