As Austin ISD celebrates Arab American Heritage Month, we profile Sura Jasim, who works at Travis Heights Elementary School as a Parent Support Specialist, a link between the school district and parents.

Sura Jasim still remembers what it is like to arrive in this country without knowing anyone, feeling insecure and – perhaps most importantly – not being able to understand the U.S. educational system. That was Jasim’s experience when she and her family first arrived from Iraq. But for the past four years she has made it her mission to prevent those same feelings for newcomer families at Travis Heights Elementary.

“We help the parents have a voice in the school and also direct them where to go when they have an issue,” said Jasim, a Parent Support Specialist (PSS). 

What’s a PSS? Austin ISD has over 70 PSS’s across the district, primarily in Title I schools. PSS’s work directly with families, campus staff and community members to help families support their children’s educational goals.

From Baghdad to Austin: Jasim arrived in Austin with her husband and two children in 2015. Back home in Iraq, she had a career as an elementary school science teacher. But because of violence and insecurity, Jasim, her husband and their two children left Baghdad to start a new life in Texas. 

Link in the chain: For Jasim, being the communication link between parents and their children's school is something she is passionate about and does with a lot of love. She encourages parents to ask for help when they need it. 

• “Also get involved in your child’s education, it doesn't matter what language you speak,” said Jasim.

“Travis Heights is Community:” Although she misses her home country, Jasim feels that Travis Heights Elementary School has become her new home, a diverse community that helps fill the void left by her homeland. Jasim describes the school community as a world of different languages and cultures together under one roof, where celebrations of diverse cultures are highly valued and appreciated.

• Jasim loves to teach the students about Iraqi culture and traditions.

• She is also grateful to Principal Michelle Amezquita-Navarro, who she says believed in her by giving her the opportunity to be part of the school. 

Homecoming: Jasim is planning a trip home to Baghdad this summer, her first in four years. She’ll visit family, friends and above all to relive the memories that she misses so much and carries in her heart.

Una maestra Iraquí da voz a las familias de la Escuela Primaria Travis Heights

Con motivo de la celebración del Mes de la Herencia Árabe en Austin ISD, presentamos el perfil de Sura Jasim, que trabaja en la escuela primaria Travis Heights como especialista de apoyo a los padres, un enlace entre el distrito escolar y los padres.

Sura Jasim aún recuerda lo que es llegar a este país sin conocer a nadie, sintiéndose insegura-y quizás lo más importante- sin poder entender el sistema educativo de Estados Unidos. Esa fue la experiencia de Jasim cuando ella y su familia llegaron de Irak. Pero desde hace cuatro años se ha propuesto evitar esos mismos sentimientos a las nuevas familias que tienen hijos en la escuela primaria Travis Heights.

 "Ayudamos a los padres a tener voz en la escuela y también a indicarles dónde acudir cuando tienen un problema", dijo Jasim, especialista de apoyo para padres (PSS por sus siglas en inglés).

¿Qué es un PSS? Austin ISD tiene más de 70 PSS’s en todo el distrito, principalmente en las escuelas Título I. Los PSS trabajan directamente con las familias, el personal de la escuela y los miembros de la comunidad para ayudar a las familias a apoyar las metas educativas de sus hijos.

De Baghdad a Austin: Jasim llegó con su marido y sus dos hijos a Austin en 2015. En Irak, Jasim era maestra de ciencias en una escuela primaria. Pero a causa de la violencia y la inseguridad, ella, su marido y sus dos hijos dejaron Baghdad para empezar una nueva vida en Texas.

El enlace: Para Jasim, ser el vínculo de comunicación entre los padres y la escuela de sus hijos es algo que le apasiona y que hace con mucho cariño. Ella anima a los padres a pedir ayuda cuando la necesitan.

•  "Involúcrate en la educación de tus hijos, no importa el idioma que hables", dijo Jasim.

"Travis Heights es comunidad": Aunque echa de menos su país, la escuela primaria Travis Heights se ha convertido en su nuevo hogar, una comunidad diversa, donde dice llenar el vacío dejado por su tierra natal. Jasim describe la comunidad escolar como un mundo de diferentes lenguas y culturas juntas bajo un mismo techo, donde las celebraciones de las diversas culturas son muy valoradas y apreciadas. 

• Jasim le encanta enseñar a los alumnos su cultura y sus tradiciones.

• También está muy agradecida a la directora Michelle Amezquita-Navarro, de quien dice que creyó en ella al darle la oportunidad de formar parte de la escuela.

Vuelta a casa: Jasim está planeando un viaje de vuelta a casa este verano, será el primero en cuatro años. Visitará a la familia, a los amigos y, sobre todo, revivirá los recuerdos que tanto echa de menos y lleva en el corazón.
