The Austin Disproportionality Advisory Committee will be sponsoring a town hall meeting to discuss the importance of disproportionality awareness on Thursday, November 3, 2011 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Carver Library, located at 1161 Angelina Street, Austin TX, 78702.
Disproportionality is the overrepresentation of a particular race or cultural group in a particular program or system. For example, African-American children are represented in the Texas Child Protective Services system at a higher rate than their percentage in the population.
This means that African-American children in GPS system:
- spend more time in foster care,
- are less likely to be reunited with their families,
- and wait longer to be adopted than Anglo or Hispanic children
Join us during this town hall meeting and come learn why it happens, who is affected by it, what is being done to put a stop to it and how you can help.
